ISO 37101:2016

ISO 37101:2016 sets the requirements for a management system for sustainable development in communities, including cities, implemented by an organization the community designates (or by the community itself). It is an Annex SL management-system standard: context (4.1 to 4.4), six purposes of sustainability (4.5: attractiveness, preservation and improvement of the environment, resilience, responsible resource use, social cohesion, well-being) and twelve sustainability issues (4.6.2 to 4.6.13: governance, empowerment and engagement; education and capacity building; innovation, creativity and research; health and care; culture and community identity; living together, interdependence and mutuality; economy and sustainable production and consumption; living and working environment; safety and security; community infrastructures; mobility; biodiversity and ecosystem services) that every strategy, programme, project, plan and service must be cross-analysed against (4.6.1) with reference to the UN Sustainable Development Goals; leadership with public progress reporting, inter-community cooperation and the commitment of elected representatives (5.1), an eleven-element policy (5.2), a top-level management representative (5.3) and assigned responsibility for issue identification (5.4); planning through risks and opportunities with long-term projections (6.1.1), a baseline review at planned intervals (6.1.2), compliance obligations (6.1.3), nine significance criteria (6.1.4), interested-party engagement (6.1.5), objectives (6.2.1) and a documented strategy (6.2.2); support (7.1 to 7.5.3); operational control and periodic coherence assessment of every instrument against the purposes and issues through its life cycle (8.1, 8.2); monitoring with a limited, verifiable indicator set and reporting to interested parties and elected representatives (9.1), internal audit (9.2) and management review recognised by elected representatives (9.3); corrective action (10.1) and continual improvement tracked on a route map and a four- or five-stage maturity matrix (10.2, Annex A). Certifiable; a claim of conformity requires every requirement without exclusion.
