The organization must keep making the management system more suitable, adequate and effective. It must also lay out a route map of the outcomes it wants and, at intervals, establish how far along the path to sustainable development it has come by means of a maturity matrix: four or five stages run across the matrix and as many elements as are needed run down it, the elements being chosen to fit the community and its issues and the stages projected as far ahead as can realistically be foreseen (Annex A gives one example, BS 8904 another).
