Top management must set a policy on sustainable development in communities that: suits the organization's purpose, its location and its economic, environmental and social setting; takes account of the material economic, environmental and social effects of what the community does through its strategies, plans, programmes, projects and services; gives a basis for setting objectives; commits the organization to meet the requirements that apply, to keep improving the system, and to provide the natural, human and financial resources that strategic and operational objectives need; promotes values, sustainable ways of living and sustainable purchasing; creates suitable incentives for sustainable initiatives; introduces inventive administrative procedures that make sustainable development part of everyday work; and establishes a forum through which interested parties take part in decisions, operations and continual improvement. The policy must exist as documented information, be made known inside the organization, and where appropriate be shared with interested parties and made accessible to them.
