NHS England HTM 06-01 Electrical Services Supply and Distribution (2017 Edition) 7.20-7.23: Two primary connections above 2 MVA and N+1 standby generators kept in readiness

Premises above about 2 MVA should have two primary connections with automatic or manual changeover, from separate DNO substations where possible. Standby generators should be maintained in operational readiness, recognising that most generator failures are failure to start or occur in the first five minutes; two full-load sets or three half-load sets on a common coupling give N+1 generator resilience and allow maintenance with continuity of supply.
