Designers and stakeholders should assess the new load early and start negotiations with the energy supplier; when applying for a supply or redeveloping, the designer must determine the capacity needed or confirm the capacity under contract (not from energy bills). Existing services to be modified or connected to should be assessed accurately, not by rules of thumb, using site records; the client should agree the load allowance, based on the clinical strategy. Growth and remodelling should be risk-assessed and allowed for in the distribution strategy, distribution boards should have space for later devices, and the load profile should be understood early, using site demand data and ERIC returns.
