Each sprinkler system installed under Insurance Code chapter 6003 goes in under the supervision of the right type of RME: an RME-General may supervise any system including dwellings, an RME-Dwelling only one- and two-family dwelling systems, and an RME-Underground Fire Main only underground piping that forms part of a system. When the job is done the RME sees that the State Fire Marshal's Office's contractor's material and test certificate for the aboveground or underground piping is fixed at or near the riser (completed in full even where the adopted standard requires no test); the original stays at the site, a second copy is kept in a dedicated file at the firm for the life of the system and available to the marshal, and a third goes to the local authority within ten days. Service, maintenance or testing by anyone other than the owner is done by a registered firm to the adopted standards, and inspection, test and maintenance of systems other than in one- and two-family dwellings is performed by a holder of a current RME-General Inspector or RME-General licence; a purely visual inspection without service, testing or certification needs no registration. The firm keeps complete records of all service, maintenance, testing and certification for the marshal to examine, and marks every vehicle regularly used for that work with its name, telephone number and certificate number in contrasting letters at least one inch high on each side.
