Chapter 9: Secondary power centres and plant (standby generators) – NHS England HTM 06-01 Electrical Services Supply and Distribution (2017 Edition)

NHS England HTM 06-01 Electrical Services Supply and Distribution (2017 Edition) 9.66-9.69: Load management of generators during prolonged outages

Generators are most likely to fail in their first five minutes on line. During outages, demand changes may leave sets lightly loaded or overloaded, and partial support of the site can cause problems in long outages (for example rising temperatures if chillers are not supported). SCADA or PLC control (ideally with N+1 controllers) may be used to manage generators, switchgear status and connected load.
