Chapter 9: Secondary power centres and plant (standby generators) – NHS England HTM 06-01 Electrical Services Supply and Distribution (2017 Edition)

NHS England HTM 06-01 Electrical Services Supply and Distribution (2017 Edition) 9.54: Minimum generator run time of 20 minutes after any start

Whatever the length of the outage, the set should run for at least 20 minutes so engine lubricant reaches operating temperature and circulates and the batteries recharge; it excludes the time to confirm a returned and stable mains supply. If mains returns early, the load transfers back and the set runs on off load until the minimum is completed.
