Chapter 9: Secondary power centres and plant (standby generators) – NHS England HTM 06-01 Electrical Services Supply and Distribution (2017 Edition)

NHS England HTM 06-01 Electrical Services Supply and Distribution (2017 Edition) 9.1-9.5: Secondary power supply strategy agreed by the Electrical Safety Group

Generator configurations range from low to high resilience and the choice should follow the overall risk assessment and be consistent with the distribution strategy; they are guidance, not a restriction on innovation. The reliability of a duplicated DNO supply used as a secondary supply should be risk-assessed. Areas (or whole facilities) the risk assessment identifies as needing resilience will always need some form of secondary supply, and the Group should agree where secondary supplies are required. Making CHP or generation the prime source should be considered against the overall risk strategy; CHP is not to be the only secondary supply.
