Chapter 9: Secondary power centres and plant (standby generators) – NHS England HTM 06-01 Electrical Services Supply and Distribution (2017 Edition)

NHS England HTM 06-01 Electrical Services Supply and Distribution (2017 Edition) 9.6-9.31: Mobile generator plug-in points: connection, earthing, security and response time

Strategically placed mobile generator plug-in points may support maintenance of fixed sets; designers should consider the hook-up location and long cables, and mobile generators should be physically secured. Where used, the realistic time to obtain and connect a set (especially if hired) should be weighed against clinical risk; managers should consider owning a unit or arranging short-notice hire, and a dedicated fenced position is desirable. Connection should follow ENA G.84, may use a BS EN 60309 plug-in up to 175 kVA, with separate earth leads to the star point and metalwork and an earth bar for the base plate. The ESQCR do not allow a mobile generator to back-feed the public network, so positive isolation from the PES is essential before and during its use.
