NHS England HTM 06-01 Electrical Services Supply and Distribution (2017 Edition) 7.14-7.19: Segregated primary and secondary systems, emergency coupling and diverse routes

Where separate primary and secondary systems are provided, space should be allowed for separate feeders, risers and distribution enclosures, and an emergency coupling should normally be locked open between them so the standby generator can feed both systems in a prolonged outage and provide a larger test load. Primary and secondary circuits should take diverse routes so one fault or incident cannot damage both; separate trays should be used where many circuits run together, power and protection or control cables should be segregated, busbar systems need the Group's acceptance, and fire-protected cables or routes should be considered.
