Operating theatre lights need a dedicated tertiary supply giving adequate light for at least 3 hours, not connected to Medical IT or its UPS. Emergency lighting follows BS EN 1838 and BS 5266-1 (escape, safety and standby); escape lighting is the minimum everywhere and should come from integral batteries; where occupants remain during a failure, safety or standby lighting should be provided on a risk-assessed basis with the Group. Grade A and B areas should generally have all lighting on the secondary supply. All emergency escape lighting should last at least 3 hours and have fully automatic network testing, and self-contained or central battery luminaires should be fed from secondary-supplied circuits where available.
