Chapter 15: Final circuits – NHS England HTM 06-01 Electrical Services Supply and Distribution (2017 Edition)

NHS England HTM 06-01 Electrical Services Supply and Distribution (2017 Edition) 15.1-15.5: No trailing multi-outlet extension leads in Group 1 and 2 locations; enough fixed outlets

Final circuit configuration should follow a risk analysis, and areas of increased risk should get supplementary measures. Multi-socket trailing leads are not to be used in Medical Locations of Group 1 or 2, because damage can expose a patient to accumulated leakage currents or cut power to several ME devices at once, so enough fixed socket-outlets should be provided where equipment is used. Using any extension lead with ME equipment needs a full risk assessment first, carried out by someone competent in BS EN 60601-1 (Appendix 4).
