Chapter 11: Tertiary power supplies (batteries, UPS, inverters) – NHS England HTM 06-01 Electrical Services Supply and Distribution (2017 Edition)

NHS England HTM 06-01 Electrical Services Supply and Distribution (2017 Edition) 11.10-11.12: UPS battery autonomy agreed with clinical stakeholders

Single-conversion UPS typically gives up to about 15 minutes for safe shutdown or bridging to the generator. Double-conversion UPS serving Medical IT and other grade A or B outlets needs 3 hours' autonomy where changeover of 0.5 s or less is required (typically Group 2), reducible to 1 hour if a secondary supply is available within 15 s; in theatres autonomy should allow patient closure of all cases, and a warning when on battery should be considered so new procedures are not started. Designers should agree autonomy with stakeholders and clinical staff through the Group.
