Clause 6.8: Community involvement and development – ISO 26000:2010

ISO 26000:2010 6.8.4: Community involvement and development issue 2: Education and culture

What does 6.8.4 require?

An organization should encourage and back education at every level, act to raise its quality and widen access to it, promote local knowledge and help end illiteracy. It should, in particular: open up learning to vulnerable or discriminated-against groups; encourage children to enrol in school and help remove obstacles to their schooling such as child labour; where appropriate, support cultural activity, respecting and valuing local culture and traditions in line with human rights, especially where this empowers groups disadvantaged in the past; consider helping people learn about and become aware of human rights; help preserve and safeguard cultural heritage, above all where its own activities affect it; and, where appropriate, encourage indigenous communities' traditional know-how and technologies to be put to use.
