Alongside the clause 4 principles, an organization approaching community involvement and development should: see itself as belonging to the community rather than standing apart from it; recognise and properly respect community members' right to decide matters affecting their community and to make the most of their resources and opportunities in their own way; recognise and properly respect what characterises the community, such as its culture, religion, traditions and history; and recognise the worth of partnership, sharing experience, resources and effort. The development goals that local community involvement serves come from the Copenhagen Declaration, the Millennium Declaration and Agenda 21, and the organization should think about backing the related public policies in its community engagement.
