Part 262 Subpart K: Academic laboratories – EPA RCRA Hazardous Waste Management

EPA RCRA Hazardous Waste Management 262.213: § 262.213 Laboratory clean-outs

Once per 12-month period per laboratory, the entity may conduct a clean-out under relaxed rules: all unwanted material must be removed within 30 calendar days from the start of the clean-out instead of 10 days after exceeding 55 gallons (or the reactive acute limits); unused commercial chemical products generated solely by the clean-out need not be counted toward the generator category for on-site accumulation (material already present and determined hazardous before the start still counts); for off-site management all hazardous waste counts, and above VSQG levels it is fully regulated when shipped; and the clean-out must be documented (laboratory, start and end dates, volume of hazardous waste generated) with records kept three years from its end. Further clean-outs in the same 12 months follow the full subpart, including the 10-day removal and full counting.
