Part 262 Subpart K: Academic laboratories – EPA RCRA Hazardous Waste Management

EPA RCRA Hazardous Waste Management 262.206: § 262.206 Labeling and management standards for containers of unwanted material in the laboratory

Containers of unwanted material in the laboratory must carry, affixed or attached, the words "unwanted material" (or an equally effective term used consistently and named in Part I of the Laboratory Management Plan) and enough information to alert emergency responders to the contents (such as chemical names or the type or class of chemical); associated with the container, at minimum, the accumulation start date and enough information for a trained professional to make the hazardous waste determination and assign codes (contents or reaction product, used or unused, how produced). Containers must be kept in good condition (damaged ones replaced, overpacked or repaired), compatible with their contents, and closed except when adding, removing or bulking, except that a working container may stay open until the end of the procedure or work shift or until full, and venting is allowed for laboratory equipment operation (such as in-line HPLC collection) or to prevent dangerous pressure.
