Australia Model Code of Practice: Managing the Work Environment and Facilities 2.8d: 2.8 Control cold environments and treat hypothermia

Where exposure to extreme cold cannot be eliminated, risks must be minimised so far as reasonably practicable, for example localised heating such as cab heaters for forklifts in cold stores and protection from wind and rain by a hut or cabin. Less effective extras are warm and waterproof clothing, acclimatisation through job rotation and breaks, and training on cold hazards and symptoms. Immediate medical help should follow warning signs such as numbness in hands or fingers, uncontrolled shivering, loss of fine motor skills, slurred speech and difficulty thinking, and irrational behaviour such as discarding clothing.
