Australia Model Code of Practice: Managing the Work Environment and Facilities 2.5: 2.5 Provide lighting suited to the task, outdoors and in an emergency

Natural or artificial lighting must allow safe movement and let workers do their job without awkward postures or eye strain. Matters to consider are the work activity, physical and psychosocial hazards, the environment, natural light changes through the day, existing artificial light, glare, contrast and reflections, with different levels possibly needed at different times. Measures include extra task lighting, repositioning or changing lights, moving the workstation, changing diffusers, and using screens, blinds or louvres against glare. Outdoor paths and car parks may need adequate lighting after dark, including to minimise harmful behaviours. Emergency lighting must be provided for safe evacuation. The code's table suggests illuminance by task class, from about 40 lux for movement and orientation to 800 lux for very difficult visual tasks (from AS/NZS 1680.1).
