Floors and other surfaces must so far as reasonably practicable be designed, installed and maintained so work can be done without risk. Covering suits the work, materials used, likelihood of spills and contaminants including dust, and cleaning needs. Floors must be inspected regularly to eliminate or minimise slip and trip hazards such as trailing cables, uneven edges, broken surfaces, gratings or covers and loose mats or tiles, with grip adequate where floors can be wet or contaminated and cleaning agents considered for slip risk. Workers standing for long periods should be protected from hard floors with matting, underlay or duckboards. Carpets should be well laid, floors for wheeled equipment chosen for low resistance, hot-scrap work needs fire-safe surfaces, and mezzanines and platforms must carry the loads placed on them.
