Australia Model Code of Practice: Managing the Work Environment and Facilities 2.1: 2.1 Provide safe entry and exit, including for workers with disability

Means of entry and exit must be safe, including for workers with special needs or disabilities. Entries should be slip-resistant when wet or dry and secured, with access controlled where violence or aggression is a risk, especially at night or when working alone. The code recommends aisles and walkways at least 600 mm wide and clear of obstructions, defined routes marked with a permanent contrasting line at least 50 mm wide or glowing markers, adequate lighting on routes and stairs, open stair sides guarded with an upper rail at 900 mm or higher plus a lower rail and a handrail on at least one side, separate entries for vehicles and pedestrians or clear segregation with kerbs, barriers or markings, safety devices on doors and gates, transparent panels on doors on main traffic routes unless fire-rated, safeguards on power-operated and upward-opening doors, and clearly marked exits with direction signs.
