Australia Model Code of Practice: Managing Risks of Hazardous Chemicals in the Workplace
Section 1: Duties, prohibited chemicals, exposure standards, register and manifest – Australia Model Code of Practice: Managing Risks of Hazardous Chemicals in the Workplace

Australia Model Code of Practice: Managing Risks of Hazardous Chemicals in the Workplace 1.5: 1.5 Keep airborne exposure below the exposure standard (r 49)

A PCBU must ensure that no person at the workplace is exposed to a substance or mixture in an airborne concentration above the relevant exposure standard (WHS Regulations r 49). The three types of standard are the eight-hour time-weighted average, the peak limitation not exceeding 15 minutes and the 15 minute short term exposure limit. They are based on current knowledge about concentrations that should neither impair the health of nor cause undue discomfort to nearly all workers, not a line between healthy and unhealthy conditions. Standards are listed in the Workplace Exposure Standards for Airborne Contaminants and the Hazardous Chemical Information System, and should be checked there even where Section 8 of the SDS shows them. Monitoring of contaminant levels may be required to comply.
