Where underground workings are, or may be, close to or heading towards an area containing water, or gas that is flammable, toxic or noxious, and that could endanger people, a prescribed mine's operator must ensure anyone at risk always knows where the advancing faces are, and that bore-holes are drilled out from the workings so the location and presence of the water or gas can be detected. Before workings are connected to other workings, including disused ones, the operator must ensure those workings are inspected for water, gas, misfires, butts and any other circumstance that could risk anyone's health or safety. When 2 working faces approach each other, the operator must ensure that, before they come within 10 metres of each other, one of them is halted, secured and barricaded, doing so as soon as reasonably possible.
