Every mine operator must, as far as reasonably practicable, identify every mining hazard at the mine and assess the risks each presents. When assessing risk, the operator has to weigh the nature of the hazard, how likely it is to cause or contribute to harm to anyone, and how severe that harm could be. Section 20 of the Act guides what is reasonably practicable, and the operator must consult under Part 4 of the Act and Division 3 of Part 5.3.
