A self-employed person or employer must ensure, as far as reasonably practicable, that plant lifting or suspending people, equipment or materials is specifically designed for that load. When it is, the employer must ensure every lift uses attachments suited to the load and stays within the plant's safe working limits, loads do not hang over or pass over people as far as reasonably practicable (this does not apply to amusement structures), loads stay under control throughout, and, as far as reasonably practicable, no load is lifted by two or more items of plant at once. Where specially designed plant is not reasonably practicable, the plant used must pose no greater risk than purpose-designed plant, and if it carries people they must ride in a work box or similar device securely attached to the plant, remain substantially inside it, wear a safety harness provided to them where they could fall from height, and have a means of safe exit if the plant fails. Plant used for stunt work, acrobatics or theatrical performance is outside the regulation.
