A self-employed person or employer must ensure the operator controls on plant are clearly identified as to their nature and function, sited so each user can work them readily and conveniently, positioned or shielded against unintended activation, and lockable in the off position so all motive power can be disconnected. Where the plant has to run during maintenance or cleaning and that cannot be avoided, the plant must have controls that allow it to run while the work is done, that only the person doing the maintenance or cleaning can operate, and that allow operation so that the risk to that person is eliminated as far as reasonably practicable or else reduced as far as reasonably practicable. This regulation does not cover emergency stop devices.
