The facility makes arrangements, with documented procedures, to prevent and prepare for emergencies: identifying the potential for natural and industrial accidents and emergencies and taking measures to prevent the associated risks or reduce the impact of disasters, giving workers the information they need to protect themselves on site, training all workers at every level regularly in prevention, readiness and response procedures, coordinating with, and where necessary informing, the outside emergency authorities and other relevant bodies, and being ready to provide first aid and medical assistance, fight fires and evacuate everyone from the site. It develops and documents an emergency action plan setting out the specific actions employers and workers take, including the means of reporting an emergency such as the emergency number, the evacuation policy and procedures, evacuation routes and passageways with floor and workplace plans and refuge areas, names, addresses, departments and numbers of emergency officials inside and outside the facility, procedures for workers who operate extinguishers or essential services before evacuating, rescue and medical duties of assigned workers, the assembly site and post-evacuation procedures, a secure location, on site or off site, for important records, and the way workers are alerted to evacuate or act and to report emergencies. It periodically inspects and tests emergency equipment such as extinguishers and alarm devices and systems and runs emergency training and drills on its own schedule, during OSH meetings, after organisational changes, after an event that triggered emergency response, and after changes in legal requirements. Applies at the lowest, intermediate and highest levels.
