In industrial and power plants the contents of piping systems (pipes, fittings, valves and coverings, excluding buried pipe and supports) are positively identified primarily by stencilled or lettered legends naming the content in full or abbreviated form per the Rule's table, with supplementary legends or colour for hazard or use. Colour or coloured bands supplementing the legends are applied at frequent intervals on straight runs, close to all valves, adjacent to every change of direction and at wall and floor penetrations, by paint, decals or bands conforming to the standard. Legends on overhead pipe above the operator's line of vision are placed below the horizontal centre line, legends may be concentrated at junctions and distribution points where appropriate, letters follow the type and size rules of Rule 1230.07, and the PSME Code chapter on identification is adopted for uniformity in emergencies.
