Welding and cutting are not permitted in rooms or areas containing combustible materials or near explosives or flammable liquids, dusts, gases and vapours until every fire and explosion hazard has been removed, nor on containers holding explosives or flammables; closed containers that held such substances are welded only after thorough cleaning and confirmation that they are free of combustible gas or vapour, or after filling with inert gas or water. Where other people work or pass, operations are enclosed by sturdy opaque screens at least 2 metres high of material that sparks will not ignite, a portable extinguisher is provided at the work, and in large establishments the safety man inspects the area and issues a written permit stating the precautions. Welders are provided with goggles, helmets or head shields with suitable filter lenses, hand shields and aprons, assistants with gloves, goggles and protective clothing, and in confined spaces fumes, gases and dusts are held within the threshold limits by local exhaust and general ventilation or by approved respiratory protection.
