Chapter 17: Maintenance and operational management – NHS England HTM 06-01 Electrical Services Supply and Distribution (2017 Edition)

NHS England HTM 06-01 Electrical Services Supply and Distribution (2017 Edition) 17.63-17.71: LV switchgear inspection every six months, annual operation of fuse-switches and test records

LV switchgear and surge protection should be visually inspected at least every six months. Routine LV maintenance should cover protection relays, batteries on load, auxiliary and timer relays, coils, terminations and mechanisms, shutters and contacts, including changeover mechanisms for the secondary supply; fuse-switches and isolators should be operated and inspected annually. All HV and LV switchgear and protection testing should be recorded on forms like the commissioning forms (Appendix 2). Good records let managers judge whether a test may be deferred, but three routine tests in a row is the most that should be deferred. Busbars and cables are inspected visually, aided by infrared scanning.
