ISO 22000:2018 8.9.4: Handling of potentially unsafe products

What does 8.9.4 require?

The organization acts to keep potentially unsafe products out of the food chain unless it can show that the hazards concerned have been brought down to acceptable levels, will be brought down to them before the product enters the chain, or that the product still meets the acceptable levels in spite of the nonconformity; it keeps potentially unsafe products under its control until they have been evaluated and a disposition decided; where products already released turn out to be unsafe it informs the relevant interested parties and starts a withdrawal or recall; and it documents the controls, the responses from interested parties and the authorisations. Every affected lot is evaluated: product affected by a failure to meet a CCP critical limit is not released; product affected by a failure to meet an OPRP action criterion is released as safe only if other evidence shows the control measures worked, or the control measures applied to the product together achieve the intended acceptable levels, or sampling, analysis or other verification shows the acceptable levels are met; release evaluations are documented. Product that cannot be released is reprocessed or further processed, inside or outside the organization, to bring the hazard to acceptable levels, or diverted to another use where the food chain's safety is unaffected, or destroyed or disposed of as waste; the disposition and the person approving it are documented.

What else in your programme already covers this

This control maps to 6 controls across 6 other frameworks. If you already hold one of them, the evidence you collected for it is the starting point here rather than new work.

  • 19.10 19.10 Step 10 / Principle 5: Establish corrective actions
  • FFM-3.4 Handling of potentially unsafe products
  • 5.10 Management of non-conformities and non-conforming products
  • FSM 24 Control of nonconforming products
  • 4.3 Nonconforming product and correcting problems

Every mapping shown was judged rather than inferred from wording similarity, and the ones that failed review are published too. See the coverage reports and what was rejected.
