Continually improving overall performance should be a standing objective, following the Plan-Do-Check-Act cycle (ISO 9004:2000, Annex B). Each of the two organizations, project and originating, is responsible for steadily improving how effective and efficient their own processes are. Project management should be handled as a process, not a one-off task, so that experience can be learned from: a system should capture and analyse what is learned during a project so that it feeds continual improvement; and there should be provision, including time and resources, for internal audits, self-assessments (ISO 9004:2000, Annex A) and, where these are required, external audits.
