Australia Model Code of Practice: Safe Design of Structures 3.3c: 3.3 Assess design risks with fact-finding, testing assumptions, testing components and expert consultation

A risk assessment considers what could happen if someone is exposed to a hazard and how likely it is, helping decide severity, whether existing controls work, what action and how urgently. It is not required for well known hazards with established effective industry controls suited to the circumstances, and an earlier assessment may be reused where hazards, tasks, things or circumstances are the same and nobody faces greater, additional or different risk. Methods for design safety include fact-finding on existing controls; testing design assumptions, such as how workers will act or react; testing structures or components specified for construction, use and maintenance; consulting key people with specialist knowledge or influence (architect, client, construction manager, engineers, project managers, health and safety representatives) and other experts; and for renovation or demolition, reviewing previous design documentation and modifications and consulting industry or employee associations.
