Safety mesh prevents falls through a roof but not from roof edges or through holes, so it should always be combined with edge protection or other controls such as fall arrest. It should comply with AS/NZS 4389, be made from 2 mm wire with longitudinal wires no more than 150 mm apart and cross wires no more than 300 mm apart (transverse wires at least 450 MPa tensile strength, longitudinal at least 500 MPa), and be installed by competent people to the manufacturer's instructions. Installers must themselves be protected from falling by scaffolding, EWPs or fall arrest. The mesh must be securely connected to the structure with enough overlap between sections to resist a falling person, and should be covered with roof cladding as soon as reasonably practicable.
