When an elevating work platform (EWP) is used the PCBU must identify its hazards (contact with electric lines, overturning, falling from the platform, crushing when elevating or moving laterally) and eliminate or minimise the risks. Controls should include training in the safe operating procedure for the brand and type and in avoiding crush and electrical hazards; training in fall arrest use and emergency rescue; using the EWP only as a work platform and not to enter or leave a work area unless AS 2550.10 conditions are met; using it only on solid level ground unless designed for rough terrain; and checking the surface for penetrations or obstructions. Where a fall prevention device or work positioning system is not reasonably practicable, workers in travel towers, boom lifts or cherry pickers must wear a properly anchored fall arrest harness, with the lanyard as short as possible and attached to the designated anchor (not the handrail unless the manufacturer specifies it). Operators of boom-type EWPs with a boom of 11 metres or more must hold a boom-type EWP high risk work licence or be enrolled trainees supervised by a licence holder.
