Trestle scaffolds are generally unsuitable at 2 metres or above; if used above 2 metres, guardrailing and toe-boards should stop people and material falling from open sides and ends. Platforms should be at least 450 mm (two planks) wide, assembled to the manufacturer's specification with compatible parts, and plank locking devices can extend spans and reduce whip. Above 2 metres, where there is no guardrail next to the working face, the gap between platform and working face should not exceed one plank width (225 mm). Height adjustment of bricklayers' trestles should use only purpose-designed pins chained to the trestle, never nails or reinforcing bar. Most trestle scaffolds suit only light duty work and work should be done only between the trestles. The PCBU must consider whether another platform, such as a small scissor lift or light aluminium mobile scaffold, would better maintain a safe system of work.
