A PCBU at the workplace, such as an excavation contractor, must make sure the workplace has an emergency plan: written instructions on what workers and others should do in an emergency. It should be able to deal with a range of emergencies, such as gas leaks, flooding, engulfment, ground slips and getting trapped workers out of the excavation, and the PCBU must put it into effect when an emergency happens. The plan must cover: emergency procedures including an effective response; evacuation procedures; notifying emergency services as early as possible; medical treatment and help; effective communication between whoever coordinates the response and everyone at the workplace; testing of the procedures, including how often; and information, training and instruction for relevant workers on carrying out the procedures.
