Section 3: Planning the excavation work – Australia Model Code of Practice: Excavation Work

Australia Model Code of Practice: Excavation Work 3.3a: 3.3 Content of a SWMS for high risk construction work (WHS Regulation 299)

High risk construction work requires a SWMS. Its main purpose is to help supervisors, workers and PCBUs put in place and monitor the controls set for the workplace so the high risk work is done safely. Under WHS Regulation 299 the SWMS must: state which kind of high risk construction work is involved; set out its hazards and the risks they create; describe how those risks will be controlled; explain how the controls are to be put in place, monitored and reviewed; and be prepared after consulting the workers doing the work and their representatives. Other construction work does not need a SWMS, but its risks must still be eliminated or, where that is not reasonably practicable, minimised as far as reasonably practicable.
