A construction project is one involving construction work costing $250 000 or more, and it has only one principal contractor: either the person commissioning the work or a person they appoint to the role. Among the principal contractor's duties are: drawing up a WHS management plan and keeping it under review; before any high risk construction work starts, preparing a SWMS or making all reasonable efforts to get one another person has prepared; arranging management of the work environment, including falls, first aid, facilities, traffic management and an emergency plan; putting up signs showing who the principal contractor is, how to contact it and where the site office is; and securing the construction workplace.
