Excavation work should be planned carefully before it begins so it can be done safely. Planning means identifying hazards, assessing risks and deciding controls in consultation with everyone involved, such as the principal contractor, designers, the excavation contractor and operators of mobile plant, and where needed structural or geotechnical engineers. Discussions should cover the ground and working environment and its condition, the weather, the work itself and any other activities with a bearing on safety, static and dynamic loads close to the excavation, how other trades interact with the work, access to the site, SWMS, control of surrounding traffic and ground vibration, the equipment to be used, public safety, existing services and where they are, how long the excavation will stay open, facilities, and emergency procedures.
