Australia Model Code of Practice: Excavation Work 3.6i: 3.6 Verify service locations by potholing before digging

Service information on hand may be inaccurate, so the excavation method should begin with an initial examination of the dig area, for example exposing a short length of the service by potholing, usually with water pressure and a vacuum system. Where the exact position of an underground cable is unknown, potholing should be used to find it carefully and avoid accidental contact. Potholing means digging with hand tools to a set depth to confirm whether assets are present at that spot; insulated hand tools rated for the voltage, or vacuum excavation, may be used to locate the cable.
