Australia Model Code of Practice: Excavation Work
Section 3: Planning the excavation work – Australia Model Code of Practice: Excavation Work

Australia Model Code of Practice: Excavation Work 3.4a: 3.4 Use appropriately licensed asbestos removalists (WHS Regulations 422, 458)

Excavation can uncover asbestos, for example naturally occurring asbestos in the ground, underground water pipes or telecommunications pits. There are two classes of licence. Class A covers removing any amount of asbestos or asbestos-containing material (ACM) of any kind: friable, non-friable, and asbestos contaminated dust (ACD). A Class B licence covers any amount of non-friable material and the ACD that comes with removing it. No licence is required for non-friable material up to 10 m2 in area, or for ACD that is linked to removing under 10 m2 of non-friable material or that is only minor contamination unrelated to removing asbestos. The PCBU that commissions removal must ensure a removalist holding the right licence does the work unless the regulations say none is needed.
