The PCBU must ensure an emergency plan specific to the workplace and its hazards is prepared, covering an effective response, evacuation procedures, notifying emergency services at the earliest opportunity, medical treatment and help, and communication between the person coordinating the response and people at the workplace, and providing for testing and its frequency and for information, training and instruction on implementing it (r 43). Good practice includes reliable communication between work areas, rescue and communication equipment on hand, displayed emergency numbers, a daily register of people on site for headcounts, named emergency personnel, alarm signals, assembly points, plant and electrical shutdown, hazardous chemical information, firefighting equipment, help for injured people and those with limited escape, controls for combustible materials and flammable liquids and gases, post-evacuation headcounts, and investigation, counselling and debrief; rescue of workers suspended in harnesses where relevant.
