Australia Model Code of Practice: Construction Work K-fo: Appendix J and K: Manage falling object risks: prevent free fall, otherwise arrest it (rr 54, 55)

A PCBU must manage the risk of an object falling on a person where it is reasonably likely to injure them (r 54), eliminating it where reasonably practicable and otherwise minimising it by a safe system of work that prevents objects falling freely so far as reasonably practicable, or if not, provides a system to arrest their fall (r 55). Objects at risk include parts of structures being built or dismantled, walls being demolished, stored materials, waste, debris, plant, tools, scaffold components and precast panels. Prevention must be considered before arrest: securing and bracing structures, securing loose sheets against wind, chutes for debris, perimeter containment screens, not stacking near un-meshed edges, enclosing lift areas, toe boards and infill panels, tool lanyards, correct lifting equipment within working load limits, pallet inspection and load stability; then catch platforms, nets, covered walkways, gantries beside footpaths, overhead protection on plant, exclusion zones, traffic diversions, spotters, work outside normal hours and hard hats.
