Where PPE is used to minimise risk, the PCBU directing the work must provide it to workers unless another PCBU does, and must provide it to other persons at the workplace such as visitors (rr 44, 45). PPE must be selected to minimise risk: suitable for the work and hazards, of suitable size and fit and reasonably comfortable, and maintained, repaired or replaced so it keeps working, clean and hygienic; selection must involve consultation with workers and HSRs and should include evaluating risk and performance needs, compatibility between items (ear muffs with hard hats), supplier consultation and a preference for products meeting the relevant Australian Standard. Workers must use it as instructed, not misuse or damage it, and report damage, defects or need for cleaning (r 46); other persons must wear it as instructed (r 47). Typical construction PPE: hard hats, safety boots, eye and face protection for power tools, chemicals and welding, gloves, sun protection, high visibility clothing, and, where assessed, hearing, respiratory and body protection including harnesses.
