The principal contractor must manage the risks associated with the storage, movement and disposal of construction materials and waste at the workplace, the storage of plant not in use, traffic in the vicinity of the workplace that may be affected by the construction work, and essential services at the workplace (r 315). Before work starts it must find out what essential services (gas, water, sewerage, telecommunications, electricity, chemicals, fuel and refrigerant in pipes or lines) are at or near the work location and could create a risk if contacted or damaged, including those hidden in slabs and walls; work near pressurised gas mains, chemical, fuel or refrigerant lines or energised electrical installations is high risk construction work needing a SWMS.
