Every circuit is protected against overload and short-circuit, coordinated with cable current-carrying capacity (including where capacity is reduced by size or installation changes), with rules for device position and omission, short-circuit interruption before conductors exceed their temperature limit, coordination of separate devices, and discrimination (selectivity) including for safety services up to arcing fault levels. Switchboards rated 800 A or more per phase need protection against internal arcing faults, including internal separation under the switchboard standards (AS/NZS 3439.1, AS/NZS 61439.2).
