World Bank Group General EHS Guidelines 2.7: 2.7 Personal protective equipment

Personal protective equipment is provided and used to protect against residual hazards after higher-level controls. PPE is a last resort used actively where alternative technologies, work plans or procedures cannot eliminate or sufficiently reduce the hazard. It is selected from the hazard and risk ranking against performance and testing criteria set by recognised organisations, gives adequate protection to workers, co-workers and occasional visitors without needless inconvenience, is cleaned and replaced when dirty or worn, and its proper use is part of recurrent training.
