Land is treated as contaminated risk where a contaminant source, an exposure pathway and a receptor are present. The approach runs in order: risk screening; interim risk management for any imminent hazard such as an explosive atmosphere or accessible, excessive contamination; detailed quantitative risk assessment considering effects, exposure and current and future land use; and permanent risk reduction measures chosen from in-situ and ex-situ treatment, containment or natural attenuation. Workers on contaminated sites get specific health and safety training, and cooperation is sought with whoever is responsible for the contamination.
